The example on the left is from a 2,850 square foot installation in Minnesota in 2014. In this example, the home is estimated to save $2,692.00 per year for heating, cooling and hot water.

Those annual savings add up to $18,080.00 in ten years and $36,160.00 in 20 years. And those numbers are based on zero inflation over that time. So this is the “worst” case scenario in terms of savings.

Payback

The customer in this project was going to have to replace the furnace and air conditioner in the near future. So we deduct the cost of replacing the furnace and air conditioner from the cost of the entire project. This gave us the cost of upgrading to geothermal. In this case the cost for upgrading will be paid back to the customer in about 3 years. The cost of the entire system is paid back in 4.5 years.

The ROI on this project is 172% over ten years and 433% over 20 years. This is based on zero inflation in fuel rates.
